Whimsical Wednesday is what G and I have decided to call one day of the week where we will deliberately do something that breaks our routine.
Both of us like routine and ritual. Maybe a little too much.
We plan our days, weeks, and even our quarters because it’s the only way to get our projects done.
I have yoga, writing, and video projects that I am excited about.
To keep these projects going means I must plan and time block and be kinda nose-to-the-grindstoney a lot.

Which I like! I really do!
I thrive on order and routine, and ritual. I like stability and predictability. I’m a If it’s Monday, it’s pasta night kind of person.
Until I don’t like it anymore. Until I bristle at it and hate it.
Too much routinized living, for too many months in a row, and I snap.
I go berserk. I start fantasizing about getting in the car and just going: ghosting on my life, my commitments, my fricken pasta on Mondays.

We just spent a week in Rehoboth, (which we planned, btw, back in January, predicting this blowout.)
The thinking was that G’s season would be over, yoga would die down for the summer, and we both would be ready for a break.
On the boardwalk one night, we talked about how we love our home and our routine, but too much, and we blow.
It was then that we came up with the concept of Whimsical Wednesdays.
We thought that if we could break up the stultifying weekly routine a little, we wouldn’t want to flee our house like it’s on fire regularly.
Sort of like letting the air out of a balloon gradually as opposed to sticking a pin in it and letting it pop.
Whimsy: Playfully quaint or fanciful. Odd.
Some ideas we’re batting around are:
- Inviting people over for champagne and croquet.
- Going to the range and hitting a bucket of balls, or playing a chip and putt course in Watkins Glen.
- Getting the kayaks wet.
- Having more informal, last-minute, come-to-the-gazebo and hang-out nights.
We’re not really sure what all else, but we are now on a whimsy hunt.
Does anybody have any suggestions?
How do you break up the monotony of routine in your life?
Please let me know!
