Inspired By In February 2024

Thinking About:

Tomorrow is the 20th Anniversary of the opening of Main Street Yoga. I have spent the past few days trying to draft a letter to my mailing list, struggling to express what their support has meant to me all these years. If someone had told me in 2004 that I’d still be doing this crazy yoga thing in 2024? I’d probably have said, “Why not!” but privately thought, “Not likely.”

Yet here we are. Many things have changed and will continue to change because change is the only constant. But what has not seemed to change in all these years is people’s love for Main Street Yoga and me, and that means everything.

Here are some shots of G and I setting up the studio in February of 2004. We were busy marking mats, putting together a desk, buying a little rug, and then holding our breath to see if anyone would come up the steps. It was such an exciting and heady time!

Whimsy.

I’ve also been thinking about whimsy. And how I want more whimsy in my life. I want to do more of this kind of jetting off to Paris thing.

(I miss Paris.) Going forward, whenever something outrageous occurs to me, I vow to act on it.

Rose City Book Pub: Sip and Write

If you love books and writing and beer or wine, you must check out this place’s website. It’s brilliant! And I’m so jealous of Emily that she has access to it. They have a “Sip and Write” on the last Tuesday of the month, where you sip on beer or wine and write. They also have a “Procrastinators Club” where you can sit and work on that gnarly overdue thing with all your procrastinator friends. They have a “Correspondence Club” where snail mail freaks gather to lick stamps and send notecards.  Check out all the events that happen there. It’s insane. It sounds like heaven. Did I mention they also serve wine and beer and have a food menu? Why is this not a chain, people? Why aren’t Book Pubs everywhere???? ( Ahem, Ithaca???)

Watching:

Instagram. So, before Paris, I was trying my best to avoid the suck of Instagram. But Emily promised to post IG Stories from Paris because all her WeWork people in Portland needed to see pics of her insane weekend adventure.

So…I broke, and now find myself deeply down the Instagram rabbit hole again. I posted a Reel myself in Paris.

I don’t know how I feel about this turn of events but I do find many things I like there. Too many things, honestly.

Here are my current favorites:

Sean Oulashin @seanoulashin: Search for him on Instagram or YouTube. I’ve mentioned him before. His content is exceptional. I recently watched his System for Superhuman Productivity (the DART system), and as a result, I’m fooling around with some of the apps he recommends.

It’s so Paris: To drool over beautiful reels of Paris. Yah, I know…

I watched Oppenheimer on the plane going out, and then my seatmate watched it coming back, so I got to watch it again but without the sound, and that’s when I thought to myself: Holy shit. Chris Nolan is a freaking genius. The shots in that movie are breathtaking. Now I want to watch it again.

I am also watching Love is Blind (Netflix). It’s garbage, but I need garbage.

Eating and Drinking: Jocko Milk and cheese omelets. Don’t ask.

Reading: An Immense World by Ed Yong (book group pick)

Listening to: Spotify playlist: Exposition MARK ROTHKO. Playlist by Super! It’s what was playing in the Auditorium (nap space) at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Brings me back. Plus, it’s an intro to some new artist.

I’ll leave you this week with a quote by Verlyn Klinkenborg that I discovered in Jane Ratcliff’s interview with Austin Kleon on Substack:

“Who will give you the authority to feel that what you notice is important and to go through with getting it down? It will have to be you. Writing is a perpetual act of self-authorization.”

Have a great week, friends. Thanks for reading!  See you next week.

Love and Namaste,

Kath
