Rehoboth Beach Week: 2024 Edition

This week, I’m writing from Rehoboth Beach, DE, where my family rents condos every year for the last week in July. My daughter and grandkids fly in from Oregon.

“It’s a tradition,” said the 10-year-old.

We joke about how it’s like a job at this point. We have to get things DONE. Check boxes. Do shit. (I don’t say “Do shit,” I say “Do Stuff” except when I forget (which is often) because I’m the grandma and need to set an example. Vacations can be challenging.

Our task list includes, but is not limited to:

  • Go crabbing
  • Play mini-golf
  • Eat Thrashers fries
  • Eat custard ice cream (which they don’t have in Oregon, which is weird but true.)
  • Go to Funland.
  • Play boardwalk games and win big stuffed things
  • Go on the Haunted House ride
  • And the bumper cars
  • Play Whack-a-Mole
  • And Muffin Pan Mania
  • Go boogie-boarding
  • Get smoothies from Green Man
  • Go to Hot Yoga (not the kids, obviously, just Em and I)
  • Get a pedicure at the Avenue Apothecary with Milena (Just me.)
  • Go to Browseabout Bookstore and do more than browse
  • Have dinner at Dogfishhead

Next week, Emily is doing a trail race in Bend, OR, on August  10th, so she’s been going on training runs in Henlopen State Park most days, too.

This year there was also a shopping adventure to the Tanger Outlets so Emily could replenish her running clothes and Obie could buy soccer cleats and running shoes.

It’s been good. And it’s not over yet! I never want it to end.

Here are some selected pics:

Crabbing. Catch and release. We caught a LOT!

Thrasher’s fries (without seagulls)

Obie won a huge stuffed otter at the hardest game on the boardwalk. (Ring Fling) We’ll have to mail it to him!

Sylvan on the Bumper Cars. Bliss!

Em and I before hot yoga

Em and I after hot yoga

The “base unit” had dinner at Salt Air last night

And while the base unit was sipping yummy cocktails and eating farm-to-table entrees, G treated the progeny to Mini Golf and IHOP (new to the Oregonians!)

Tonight, dinner at Dogfishhead.

Summahhhh….
