The Week In Review: June 6 -11. 2022

Inspired by

Emily always inspires me. Today she turned me onto a Food blogger and Instagrammer who goes by alexandracooks.

We’re both trying to skew more toward vegetarianism in our eating, and this blogger like veggies. And bread. I hope this will inspire me to start cooking again.

Watching

I’m still watching Succession, but I’m getting close to the end and will soon need a new show.

Today I had to confess to Emily that I had never watched The Office. (It came up because the two actresses who played Pam and Angela have a new book out called Office BFFs and we had heard them interviewed on the latest Happier podcast.)

Emily said: “Oh, you’ve got to watch it, Mom!”

So that will be my Summer of 2022 binge show. It’s on Peacock. Emily said she might re-watch it, too, which will make it even more fun. I’ll rope G in, too.

I also watched the first January 6th hearing. It was impressive. Dark. Grim. Infuriating. But also compelling and riveting storytelling. Kudos to whoever put this all together.

Reading

I’m still listening to The 48 Laws of Power which is still creeping me out.

Law 4: Always Say Less Than Necessary.

Law 5: So Much Depends On Reputation—Guard It With Your Life.

Law 6: Court Attention At All Cost.

Yikes.

Tomorrow the Yoga Lounge Book Group will pick a non-fiction title for June/ July. I’m going to suggest I’m Possible by Richard Antoine White. It was recommended to me by Diane Kalata who knows me, and what I like, and who is a voracious reader. It sounds like one of those “against all odds” personal triumph stories that I am a sucker for: A little black boy with an alcoholic mother finds a passion for the tuba, and his devotion to that passion changes his entire life. Even if the Book Group doesn’t pick it, I’m going to read it.

I also just downloaded The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollen into my Kindle.

I read it back in 2006 when it first came out, but I could stand to be reminded. Emily’s reading it now for the first time, so it will be fun to read/re-read it together as we make focaccia with alexandracooks.com and watch The Office.

Did I just design my summer???

Listening to

The Audible version of The 48 Laws of Power.

Thinking about

“Any guy who plays in one of these (LIV) events … the money is life-changing. They got that right. People who would never have paid attention to this are paying attention now. Because it is life-changing.”

I read this in an article about Greg Norman in the WaPo. He’s talking about pro-golfers leaving the PGA to play in this sketchy Saudi league.

It got me thinking: What is life-changing money when you already make 75 mil a year?

What are these guys wanting to change about their lives that they think millions more dollars will be able to affect?

I think if you’re not happy making 75 mil a year, you probably have a problem deeper than money can solve.

Dreamlife

Nothing to report.

Eating and Drinking

I’ve switched to Reisling on nights I drink wine.

Last night we had margaritas and tacos. Ira and Fred came over. I like a salted rim, I must say.

I’m also really loving Pellegrino Essenza sparkling mineral water. I get the variety case.

Researching

Nothing at the moment.

Grateful for

These late spring days.

My walks with Nikki

Pretty deck furniture

Helpful apps that allow me to identify bird calls and flowers.
